The Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) has its headquarters in Bergisch Gladbach and is a practice-oriented, technical-scientific research institute and is a division of the Fed-eral Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI).
It focuses on diverse issues concerning the relationships between roads, people and the environment and aims to improve the safety, environmental compatibility, economic efficiency and performance of the roads.
The research results are used by the BASt as a basis for advising the BMVI in technical and transport policy issues. Its duties range from planning, coordination and implementation of perennial research projects to short-notice replies to queries on how to support the BMVI’s current work. Aside from this, the BASt is a leading force in the network of cutting-edge, national and European research institutes working in the field of road transport and has significant global standing in terms of developing standards and norms.
Above and beyond this, the BASt is active in consultancy and surveys, as well as assessing and certifying and also functions as assessment centre for driving licence services.
